Mountaineers Classes September 24-28, 2020

A description of goings on for the week follows. Students should use this information along with information from class, Edmodo calendar and Google Classroom. 

Language Arts

It was great to see all of your students'  faces for the first time last week, at least the parts that weren't shielded by their masks. All language arts classes will focus on the reading and writing of narrative texts during Quarter 1. Click here to see a brief unit overview.


Quill and CommonLit are digital platforms that will be used in our class. If your student is under 13 years of age, click here to confirm that your student may use these tools.


All Classes

- Bring a notebook to class (due Monday, 8/24)

- Remarkable Personal Essay (due Friday, 8/28)

- Introduction to Quill, an online learning platform for grammar

 

8th Grade LA

- Cohort A will begin reading The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon

- Cohort B will review central idea and theme before reading and responding to a short narrative text

 

Advanced LA

- Both cohorts will begin a study of Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson.


Math

Math 8 (Periods 1 and 2)

 

*Students will need a graph paper notebook to be only for math.

*Students were given a textbook/workbook during orientation. During hybrid learning this book (Volume 1 and Volume 2) should be kept at home. The book will be used as a reference and sometimes assignments will be completed in this resource. Students are allowed to write in the book as it is theirs to keep.

 

For the week beginning August 24th, we will be reviewing GEMS (aka Order of Operations). On Friday, 8/21, students watched a review video for GEMS. In person, we will be practicing GEMS with an around the room activity and by using whiteboards. For remote learning, students will have practice problems to complete in their math notebook. 

A quiz over GEMS is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 2 for Cohort A; and Thursday, Sept. 3 for Cohort B.

 

Algebra (Periods 3, 5, and 6)

 

*Students will need two graph paper notebooks to be only for math.

*Textbooks are available for check out through the library, or can be accessed at BigIdeasMath.com. The textbook is a great reference resource, however, all assignments will be posted on Google Classroom.

 

This week we will be reviewing solving Algebraic Equations using Inverse Operations. On Friday, 8/21, students watched a review video for Multi-Step solving. In person, we will be practicing solving equations with an around the room activity and by using whiteboards. For remote learning, students will have practice problems to complete in their math notebook. 

A quiz over Multi-Step solving is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 2 for Cohort A; and Thursday, Sept. 3 for Cohort B.

 

Wellness:

Science:

Welcome back! 

I’m looking forward to a great year with you all!

This week, we will focus on safety in the classroom and doing some introductory activities.  There will be a quiz over safety information on Friday.

Social Studies:

This week in social studies we are examining life in pre-Revolutionary war America. Students will be learning about the three colonial regions through maps, readings and discussions.

PLEASE download the app and scan your grocery receipts for those box tops!! They add up!!  At the end of the year and sometimes, during the year, we use the proceeds from these to fund celebratory activities and awards we cannot otherwise do.


If you have collected any paper box tops, please bring them in to Ms. Lindquist who is managing the box tops for the Mountaineer’s team.
