Mountaineers Classes August 31 - September 4, 2020

A description of goings on for the week follows. Students should use this information along with information from class, Edmodo calendar and Google Classroom. 

Language Arts

All Classes

- Students will take the i-Ready Reading Diagnostic on Friday, 9/4.

 

8th Grade LA

- Cohort A will continue reading The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. An assignment called Collecting the Clues will ask them to analyze how particular details contribute to the story. A lesson on narrative point of view will guide them to discover how differences in point of view create different effects.

- Cohort B will finish their lesson and an assignment (Folktale Analysis) that cover central idea and theme. We'll also learn more about tone and mood in literature and discuss a short story called "Super-Toys Last All Summer Long" by Brian Aldiss.

 

Advanced LA

- Students will read Part II of Brown Girl Dreaming this week. Lessons will address tone and mood in literature as well as close reading. They'll also begin an assignment called Showing vs. Telling that assesses these topics. 


Math

Math 8 (Periods 1 and 2)

 

A quiz over GEMS is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 2 for Cohort A; and Thursday, Sept. 3 for Cohort B.

 

For the week beginning August 31st, we will be wrapping up our review of GEMS (Order of Operations) and beginning our study of one- and two-step equation solving. 

 

All details for eLearning days can be found on Google Classroom:

Day 1: Order of Operations Q4 2020 Worksheet; Answers to evens are included so you can check your work

Day 2: Face-ing Math Two-Step Equations (you will get this handout Monday/Tuesday during class)

Friday: After our whole class meeting on Google Meets, you will have time to finish your Face-ing Math sheet.

 

In class, we will be working on One- and Two-Step Solving and taking a quiz.

 

Algebra (Periods 3, 5, and 6)

 

A quiz over Multi-Step solving is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 2 for Cohort A; and Thursday, Sept. 3 for Cohort B.

 

For the week beginning August 31st, we will be wrapping up our review of Multi-Step Equation Solving and beginning our study of functions.

Day 1: "Multi-Step Quiz Review 2020"  --- Answers are included on the second page so you can check; make sure you are showing all your steps the way we have been practicing in class

Day 2: Face-ing Math Multi-Step Equations (you will get this handout Monday/Tuesday during class)

In class, we will be working on Functions Overview; 5 "Faces" of a Function: Equation, Graph, Table, Tiles, Words and taking a quiz.

 

Wellness:

Science:

This week, we start our genetics unit (although it actually started with last week’s remote assignment.)  There will be short checks for understanding (short quiz) after the first couple of days.

 


Social Studies:

This week in social studies we are examining socio-cultural aspects of the colonies. Students will begin their first content grade, "Where would you colonize" ad project which will  be due on 9/11. PLEASE download the app and scan your grocery receipts for those box tops!! They add up!!  At the end of the year and sometimes, during the year, we use the proceeds from these to fund celebratory activities and awards we cannot otherwise do.


If you have collected any paper box tops, please bring them in to Ms. Lindquist who is managing the box tops for the Mountaineer’s team.
