Ms. Angie Burt
My name is Angie Burt. I am excited to be your student’s Math teacher this school year! I have been at Rocky Heights since 2004 and there is no place I’d rather be! My husband, Keith, and I have two children, Audrey and Seth. Audrey is a 6th grade Learning Specialist here at Rocky Heights. Seth attends CU Boulder.
I am originally from South Dakota. Before moving to Colorado, I taught Science for six years in Wyoming. In college, I majored in Chemistry and minored in Math. I also have a Master’s Degree in teaching. I have spent all but one year of my teaching career with 8th graders!
Outside of school, I love to walk my dog and spend time with family. I’m also a big sports fan. I volunteer in youth sports and coached competitive softball for 15 years.
In addition to information on Infinite Campus, I send a weekly update via gmail to guardians that includes the current topic of study, due dates, and class overview. Students can access more detailed classroom information through Google Classroom.

Mr. Matt Carlile

Mr. Matt Carlile
Hello, my name is Matt Carlile. I have been teaching since 2013, all at the 8th-grade level. I have been at RHMS since 2016. My first 3 years of my career teaching were in Fort Morgan, Colorado at FMMS. I grew up in Ken Caryl, attended Chatfield Senior High, and then I attended Colorado State University.
I have been married to my wife, Megan, since 2021. She was a language arts teacher here at RHMS, but she now works from home, taking care of our two sons, Liam and Theo. I am an avid hockey fan, playing goalie since I was 10, and watching as many Avalanche games as I can. In my free time, I enjoy disc golfing, woodworking, and playing games with my sons.

Ms. Heather Igel
I have been teaching middle school for longer than I would like to admit (as this determines my seasoned age). But, I will disclose that I have been teaching at Rocky Heights since 2012 and definitely call this place my second home. I enjoy teaching math and the challenges of getting kids to love it too. In my leisure time, you can find me outside playing golf, sailing the lakes of Colorado (hopefully the high seas in my future) and enjoying all of the recreation that Colorado has to offer.
All things related to my classroom (notes, worksheets, assignments, etc.) can be found on Google Classroom.
The best way to reach out to me is through email. My email address is hpigel@dcsdk12.org. I do not check email in the evenings but I will get back to you within 24 hours.
Ms. Michelle McClarran

Ms. Michelle McClarran
Hello! My name is Michelle McClarran, and I’m excited to be starting my 13th year at Rocky Heights Middle School and my 28th year teaching middle school math. I’m passionate about helping students build confidence and a strong foundation in math, and I feel fortunate to work in such a supportive and engaging school community.
Outside of school, I’m married and a proud mom to two wonderful daughters. Kaley will be a senior at Rock Canyon High School this year, and Kendall is starting her freshman year—also at Rock Canyon. Our family also includes a yellow lab named Toby, who keeps us on our toes!
In my free time, I enjoy taking walks, cooking new recipes, and traveling with the family whenever we get the chance. I’m truly excited for the year ahead and feel honored to have the opportunity to teach your child. I look forward to a fantastic year of growth, learning, and fun!

Mr. Sawyer Petre
Mr. Sawyer Petre
Hello!
My name is Sawyer Petre, and I am the Math 8 and Geometry teacher here at Rocky Heights. This will be my first year at Rocky Heights, and I could not be more excited to join this community!
I am originally from Denver, Colorado, where I attended Kent Denver School for both middle school and high school. I then attended the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, for my undergraduate degree. I received my Master’s in Education from Grand Canyon University.
I have always had a passion for teaching. I come from a family of teachers who have inspired me to help students become the best versions of themselves. My mother has been a math teacher at Highlands Ranch High School for over 35 years, and my grandmother taught math for over 50 years!
I played collegiate football at the University of Puget Sound and had a five-year professional career playing in the Indoor Football League. I had the privilege of coaching youth American football in Beijing, China, for a year, and have coached high school football at several schools around the country.
My wife and I moved back to Colorado this summer from Spokane, Washington, to begin a family of our own and be a part of the Rocky Heights community. We enjoy playing golf, watching college football, exploring new restaurants, and playing with our dog, Rip.
My goal is to help students become lifelong learners and develop habits and skills that will help them be successful not only in the classroom but in life! I am so excited for the school year and look forward to working with everyone!
My email is the most effective way to reach me. My email is: spetre@dcsdk12.org. I will check my email daily and will respond as soon as possible. I may respond the following day if I receive an email after school hours.
I will use Google Classroom as a form of communication, which can be found here:
A weekly newsletter will also be sent every Monday!

Mr. Stephen Schmitz
Welcome to Math 7 and ACC Math 7! I've been teaching since 2000, and I've been a proud member of the Rocky Heights community since 2005. It's a special place for my family, as my wife is also the Spanish teacher here! We have two children: our son Tanner is a research psychologist at CU Anschutz, and our daughter Taylor is a junior at Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction.
I'm a firm believer in the power of mistakes. You'll often hear me say, "I love mistakes. Every time you make a mistake, your brain grows." You will also hear me say, “Failure and struggle do not mean that you can't do math—these are the most important parts of learning and growth.”
I check my email periodically throughout the school day and will get back to you as soon as I can. Please be aware that if an email is sent after school hours, I may not read or respond until the following school day.
- For class notes, please refer to our Google Classroom.
- For assignments, you can find all assignments and their completion status (turned in or missing) in Infinite Campus (IC).
