Advanced Language Arts
Students will dive into our Perspectives of Power unit. We’ll begin by analyzing Moyo Okediji's painting The Dutchman using a visual analysis wheel to explore the artist's message and techniques. Following this, students will read Charles Perrault's Blue Beard and respond to the thought-provoking question: Is it right to be punished for breaking a rule?
Responses should include all the essential parts of an argument that we’ve discussed in class: Claim, Reasoning, Evidence, Counterargument, and Rebuttal. This will provide a framework for crafting thoughtful and well-supported arguments.
Language Arts
In Language Arts, we’ll start by reviewing the components of an effective argument and annotating Sojourner Truth’s powerful speech, Ain’t I a Woman? Students will also complete a SOAPSTone analysis to deepen their understanding of Truth’s rhetorical choices and purpose.
Later in the week, we’ll examine both sides of an argument regarding the impact of gaming communities on communication. Using the provided articles, students will develop their own claims and construct arguments supported by textual evidence. This will allow them to practice critical thinking and persuasive writing skills.
